People ask why I’m running At Large instead of in Ward One again — four times the campaigning, but essentially the same office. The main reason is that we’ve found a professional, talented, intelligent candidate for Ward One: Sarah Allan. I also think that my experience on Council better serves the whole City instead of just one Ward. Each Ward has its own issues and priorities, and the goal for Council is to balance each for the good of the whole. I have spent almost 10 years seeing what works, what doesn’t, and what could work better. Our biggest issue today is financial, same as it was for the six years I spent on the Finance Committee. During my time on Finance, we moved the City from multi-million dollar shortfalls to a $2 million dollar surplus. My tenure on Community Development has included molding Norwood’s CRA tax abatement program — a primary reason Urology Group is building their state-of-the-art facility in Norwood instead of Kentucky. Before 2010, the Committee met on a regular basis to work with businesses and plan new initiatives, like Cornerstone, Linden Pointe, and a host of smaller projects. We need an active Community Development Committee more now than ever before, and I’d like to see it rejuvenated. Some of the other things I’m proud of having a hand in: Vacant Building License program RMX Zoning to prevent splitting up single family homes Group Home limitations Disorderly House Ordinance Better Relations with Xavier University Comprehensive Housing Survey Development highlights: Linden Pointe Medical building replaced MAB Paint store Seek Research Cornerstone Siemens rehabilitation and retooling Cutting bureaucratic hurdles to demolishing junk buildings Other than a responsible approach to city finances, my priorities for the future will be: Reinvigorating the Community Development Committee to bring new businesses to Norwood Implementing a Good Landlord program to improve absentee landlord and tenant behavior Finding a new revenue source for street repair that can’t be raided for more “important” things |
